Coaches & PLayers

TERRY MACMILLAN (COACH MAC)
TERRY MACMILLAN (COACH MAC)

Revenge Head Coach

Rugby has been a tremendously large part of Terry’s life for over 35 years.

Introduced to the sport while attending Indiana University in Bloomington back in 1987, he’s been involved with almost every aspect since. He was a select side caliber player while at IU and later for the Indianapolis Impalas.

To say he just loved playing rugby would be an understatement.  He played competitively well into his 40’s and was known to travel almost anywhere and play for most any team.   Terry was one of the founding members of the Indianapolis Impalas 7’s team that eventually won the Midwest 7’s championship and competed at Nationals in 1997.

Typical of many life-hardened rugby players, Coach Mac did not retire from playing easily.  Throughout his 40’s he was known to sneak in a pickup game with most anyone that would take him.  This included playing an alumni match at IU where he set up future Shark Tank star Mark Cuban with a perfect pop pass 2 meters short of the try zone, that he subsequently knocked on.

However, Mark still paid him the $100 bonus he had promised to anyone who set him up for a try.

Eventually, playing the game he loved was replaced with coaching it.

As one of the coaches for the Pike High School program, he helped take the boys to 3 straight state championship games and for a year was also the head coach on the newly started Pike girls’ team, which  went to the final four at state in their first year established.

After seeing both teams come up short due to their lack of experience compared to other teams, Terry stepped down from the high school programs and started Pike Youth Rugby. Coincidently, his youngest daughter Taryn had come to find a passion for rugby at this time also; thus began the adventure of coaching her as well. Taryn is now a sophomore at Brownsburg and happily playing for the Revenge.

Coach Mac’s coaching status the past 8 years has been based around where Taryn has played. He’s happy to have found a more permanent home here on the west side with the Revenge and is excited by what these kids, the culture and the coaching staff can accomplish.

Outside of Rugby, Terry and his wife of 25 years, Joyce enjoy travelling and occasionally flipping houses together.

While he’s a lifetime Hoosier, he has travelled extensively and had been to every state in the U.S. by the time he was 40.

His two favorite destinations have been Orcas Island, WA. and Queenstown, NZ.    He even met Richie McCaw while in New Zealand and got a great photo with him and his wife at a pub. He has a daughter, Jordan, who he got to coach while at Pike.  She is now an English teacher at Fishers High School. His son, Trace, was a runner at Pike and is now an aspiring Monga writer.

Coach Mac’s youngest, Taryn, aside of Revenge rugby team, does EVERYTHING else that she can fit into a 16 hour day that she can convince her father to drive her to.
